- 30ml espresso
- 60ml steamed milk
- 60ml milk foam
Description
The Cappuccino is one of the most famous espresso-based drinks worldwide. It is renowned for its luxurious, airy foam cap and the balanced harmony between the rich espresso and sweet, steamed milk. In many parts of Italy, it’s affectionately shortened to “cappuccio.”
Fun Fact
The name “cappuccino” is derived from the Capuchin friars. The color of the espresso mixed with milk was said to resemble the color of their hooded robes (or cappuccio in Italian). The drink’s history dates back to Viennese coffee houses in the 1700s, but the modern espresso-based version became popular in Italy in the early 20th century.
Preparation Recipe
- 1 shot of espresso (30 ml)
- 120 ml of whole milk, steamed to create ~60ml of milk and ~60ml of foam
- Served in a 150–180 ml (5–6 oz) ceramic cup
Preparation Techniques
- Use cold, whole milk for the best foam quality.
- The key is to create a “microfoam” with fine, silky bubbles, not large, stiff peaks.
- A well-made cappuccino should have a smooth, velvety texture throughout, with the foam integrating into the liquid.
